Aggie Track & Field sets a pair of school records this weekend

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M./SEATTLE, Wash. — Utah State split its track & field teams to compete at two different meets this week. The Aggies sent members of the squad to Albuquerque, N.M., to compete at the Team Challenge, hosted by New Mexico, and to the UW Invitational in Seattle, Wash., hosted by Washington.

All combined, the Aggies picked up five event titles and 34 top-10 finishes.

At the UW Invitational, Utah State sent its top distance runners to compete at sea level with some of the nation’s best. In the men’s 3,000-meter run, senior Dillon Maggard shattered the school record by over 10 seconds, finishing in first place with a time of 7:52.99, becoming the first Aggie to clear the eight-minute mark in school history.

For the women, junior Cierra Simmons broke her own school record in the 3,000m race, finishing in 13th, but sixth among collegiate athletes, with a time of 9:30.93, nearly eight seconds ahead of her previous school record. Senior Kelsey Yamauchi-Richins now holds the second spot on USU’s all-time 3,000m list, as she placed 17th overall in 9:37.45.

Junior Clay Lambourne also claimed the 800m race title, finishing in 1:49.94, less than a second behind his personal best, while senior Jordan Beutler ran a 1:51.34 to take third and put himself in 10th on the all-time USU list for the event.

Junior Kashley Carter recorded the second-best 5,000m time in school history, finishing 12th, and sixth among collegiate runners, in 16:32.67. Sophomore Luke Beattie took second among collegiate runners, ninth overall, in the men’s 5,000m race in 14:31.47.

At the Team Challenge, Utah State’s women’s throwers continued their early-season dominance, as USU’s shot put competitors swept the top three spots. Junior Brenn Flint won her third-consecutive title, recording a throw of 15.88m (52-1.25), while senior Olivia Moriconi and sophomore Maia Garren placed second and third with tosses of 15.45m (50-8.25) and 15.13m (49-7.75), respectively. For Garren, it set an indoor personal best by over half a meter.

On the men’s side, sophomore J.D. Thorne picked up the 3,000m title, finishing in 8:39.91. In the field, junior Leaugen Fray claimed the high jump title, clearing a height of 2.07m (6-9.50).
