LOGAN — A 23-year-old Lewiston man appeared in court, accused of sexually abusing a child. DeAndre Cardwell made his initial appearance in 1st District Court Monday morning. He is charged with aggravated sexual abuse of a child, a first-degree felony.

Cache County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Matt Bilodeau said deputies believe the assault took place in 2011 and involved a young girl. The victim allegedly knew the suspect.

During Monday’s court appearance, Judge Thomas Willmore read the charges to Cardwell and explained that the case carried a possible penalty of 15-years-to-life in prison. He ordered him to appear again February 21, giving him time to hire an attorney.

Bilodeau said deputies are looking at whether there were more victims. Additional charges are pending as the investigation continues.
