Op-ed: Wet the beak or tighten the belt

Every morning I roll out of bed, put on faded blue jeans, a collared shirt and tan work boots. Not because they are back in style but because when I show up at my job I’m going to get dirty. I’m going to come home worn out. Every dollar I earn comes hard to me. I am certain that yours is the same.

I wish that our officials realized that we aren’t a wealthy group of people. We work hard for what we have. Our money gets pulled in a hundred different directions. We wish that it was treated with more reverence and respect.

We’re ok paying for the things that we need—our kids, roads, police, and power. We want our city to look nice. We want our families to be safe. We want people to want to live here. But our money is limited.

When government decides that it doesn’t have enough money it has two options only–wet the beak or tighten the belt.

The property tax proposal that many of us received this week was another reminder that our officials always seem to choose to wet the beak rather than tighten the belt.

I’d like to introduce Logan City to belt tightening. I’m convinced that there is a ton of waste. I want to use the savings that I find to fix this place up. I want Logan to compete better for long-term residents. I want to end the neglect of our neighborhoods. Wet the beak or tighten the belt is the decision in this election. It is a clear and stark contrast.

I really do need your help. Please take the time to seek out a voter, give them a stamp, ask them where their ballot is, tell them to go in to city hall on Tuesday, explain to them the differences between what I’m proposing and what our officials have always done. It’s an absolute certainty that I will lose this election without your help. It’s that simple.

Thank you for reading my articles. Thank you for helping me. I’m humbled by the support that so many have expressed. Thank you.
