LOGAN, Utah — Utah State’s men’s cross country team won its second-consecutive race this season, as the Aggies claimed the team title on Friday at the USU-hosted Steve T. Reeder Memorial. The race is named after the former USU distance coach who passed away in 2016.

The Aggie men finished ahead of Weber State, which took second with 53 points, just ahead of Southern Idaho’s 54 points to place third. Westminster finished in fourth place with 97 points.

Utah State’s women’s team took second with 44 points, placing behind meet-winner BYU’s 34 points. Utah finished third with 75 points, and Weber State placed fourth with 90 points. Southern Idaho scored 106 points to place fifth, while Westminster took sixth with 174 points.

Pacing the Aggies, junior Kody Gould finished third in the men’s 7-kilometer race with a time of 21:50.39. However, he was the first collegiate finisher. The first two finishers both ran unattached. For Gould, the race had a special meaning.

“I never ran for coach Reeder, but he was the one who recruited me,” Gould said. “I wasn’t the best in high school, and coach Reeder gave me a shot. I owe him everything for that.”

Senior Spencer Fehlberg took 11th overall with a time of 22:22.49, while a pair of freshmen finished just behind him, as Coen Haroldson and Sam Coleman placed 12th and 13th with times of 22:26.16 and 22:31.04, respectively.

Senior Jordan Beutler and freshman Jakob Tew rounded out Utah State’s finishers, as they placed 16th and 20th with times of 22:46.00 and 23:20.60, respectively, as all of the Aggie runners placed in the top 20.

Leading the way for the Aggie women, senior Kelsey Girardelli recorded a personal-best time in the 5-kilometer distance with a 19:00.51 to place sixth.

“We definitely are trying to run as a team, especially with our goal being to end up at nationals this season,” Girardelli said. “We want to try and run as a pack.”

The Aggies completed their goal of running together, as sophomore Elli Eastmond finished just behind in seventh with a time of 19:06.18, to be the second of six USU runners in the top 20.

Also finishing in the top 20, junior Heather Holt took 10th with a time of 19:14.21, freshman Rae Bedke ran a 19:25.12 to take 12th and junior Shannon Maloney placed 19th with a time of 19:46.77. Sophomore Sydney Jacobs finished 20th in 19:49.81.

Utah State is back in action next weekend when it travels to Louisville, Ky., to compete in the Pre-National race on Saturday, Oct. 14.
