LOGAN — A judge has scheduled a preliminary hearing for Jeffrey L. Detton, a 30-year-old man accused of downloading child pornography. Judge Brian Cannell also reduced the former Logan man’s bail from $100,000 to $50,000.
Detton appeared in 1st District Court Tuesday morning. He is charged with 10 counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, a second-degree felony. His public defender, Shannon Demler asked the court for the preliminary hearing, when prosecutors will present their evidence in the case. The hearing was scheduled for September 21.
Court records show charges and an arrest warrant were filed against Detton in March 2015. He wasn’t arrested until August 1 and booked into the Cache County Jail.
During Tuesday’s court appearance, Demler asked the court to lower Detton’s bail to an amount he could pay. State attorney Jacob Gordon opposed the reduction, telling the court, the suspect had run after the charges and warrant were filed. He noted that law enforcement had not been able to locate him for over two years.
Demler said his client had not tried to hide from officers, but was never told about the charges and warrant after deputies originally seized his computer.
Detton acknowledged though that he had moved to Riverton, after previously living in Logan at the time the alleged crimes were committed.
