Power restored early Friday morning after emergency outage repair

LOGAN — Rocky Mountain Power officials say Thursday night’s emergency repair outage was successful. The power outage lasted almost five-hours and affected around 2,800 customers in Wellsville, Mendon and parts of Nibley.

Spokesman Paul Murphy explained that the outage was so crews could repair a substation regulator.

“We had to repair some damaged equipment and make sure that the service would be reliable in the area for a long time to come,” Murphy said. “It is unfortunate when we have to have an emergency power interruption.”

Crews cut the electricity to affected customers Thursday night at 10 p.m. Originally, it was predicted the outage would last until 6 a.m. Friday but power was actually restored at 2:45 a.m.

Murphy understood that no matter the time of day, a power outage is never convenient. He said they appreciated customer’s patience while crews completed the repair work.

“We do a lot of work in the spring and the fall, to make sure that we are ready for the summer and winter, but sometimes we just have to do the repairs during the summer. So we’re sorry for what happened and we hope that people understand that in the long run, they are going to be better off.”

Rocky Mountain Power attempted to notify affected customers in advance. Thursday afternoon, residents received a phone message from the company about the outage.

Murphy said Thursday’s outage is a reminder to everyone that there are several items people should have in case of an emergency.

“Our power has become so reliable that we think it is always going to be on, and right now our reliability is at about 99.98%. Even at that amount, that means the electricity is going to go off and so you need flashlights. You need generators if you have sensitive equipment. You need a non-electronic can opener so that you can eat.”

It is also recommended that everyone have a supply of non-perishable food, bottled water and a battery operated radio.
