CACHE COUNTY — Dealing with 18,000 pieces of property is a huge job for Cache County Assessor Kathleen Howell, who says her ultimate goal is to be fair and equitable to all taxpayers.
In a report to the Cache County Council Tuesday, Howell said the housing market is booming.
“The listing prices are off the chart,” she said. “The one area we’ve really seen increase is our townhomes, condos, it’s that price range. We’ve seen townhomes that were $82,000 two years ago. Now we’re at $124,000. Now, that doesn’t seem like a big bump, but percentage-wise, that’s huge. That’s a huge percentage. The homes where you don’t see as high a percentage is—of course, it’s all about supply and demand—are those homes that are the most expensive.”
Howell said there is huge difference in what people pay if they are in the greenbelt as opposed to not being in the greenbelt. In addition to property valuations, she said her staff gets very busy with audits, appeals and other kinds of transactions.
