<span style=”font-family: Arial, serif;”>A two-year-old boy from Box Elder County has died after drowning Sunday morning in Left Hand Fork Canyon, east of Hyrum.

<span style=”font-family: Arial, serif;”>Cache County Sheriff’s Lt. Mike Peterson said deputies were dispatched the area after the child’s mother called 911. She reported that their family was camping in the area when the boy wondered off. The campsite was 2.5 miles up the Left Hand Fork area of Black Smith Fork Canyon.

<span style=”font-family: Arial, serif;”>The mother told deputies they noticed that boy missing after leaving him unattended for a few moments. After the family searched for the boy for 45-minutes unsuccessfully, the mother drove out of the canyon to call for help.

<span style=”font-family: Arial, serif;”>Peterson reported the child was found about an hour later, approximately a half mile downstream from the family’s campsite. He was unresponsive and later pronounced dead by paramedics.

<span style=”font-family: Arial, serif;”>Investigators believe that the child fell into the water and was swept downstream. The Sheriff’s Office and State Medical Examiners Office are conducting a full investigation into all the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.

<span style=”font-family: Arial, serif;”>The identity of the boy has not been released yet, pending notification of extended family.

<span style=”font-family: Arial, serif;”>Peterson said the drowning is a stark reminder of the dangers surrounding rivers and streams this time of the year. He encouraged those camping or picnicking around water, to be vigilant in keeping a very close eye on children.

<span style=”font-family: Arial, serif;”>Peterson explained that there is still a lot of snow-pack in the mountains and warmer temperatures will continue to result in swift and high water.
