UPDATE: Smithfield man killed in two-vehicle crash in Hyde Park

HYDE PARK — Police have released the identities of two people involved in a crash Thursday morning that killed one man and sent the other to the hospital.

North Park Police Chief Kim Hawkes said 61-year-old Smithfield resident Curtis F. Nilson died, after the white Chevrolet Cobalt he was driving drifted into oncoming traffic. The car struck a gold Chevrolet pickup truck that was being driven by 40-year-old Kendall J. Eliason. He had to be extricated and transported by ambulance to a local area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The accident occurred at 8:55 a.m. near 4000 N US-91, in Hyde Park. Traffic was partially blocked and detoured for over an hour while crews investigated the accident.

Hawkes said a witness confirmed, the Cobalt was driving northbound in the inside lane when it drifted across the median and struck the southbound pickup truck head on.

Nilson was pronounced dead at the scene. Funeral services are being arranged.
