Warming temperatures causing concerns along Utah and Idaho rivers and streams

The Bear River winds its way around and along Pegram Road in Bear Lake County, Idaho.

The National Weather Service in Pocatello has issued a Flood Warning for the Bear River in areas of Bear Lake County, Idaho. On Friday afternoon the river was near flood stage and is expected to rise above that by Saturday evening.

They project that the river will continue to rise a foot over flood stage by Wednesday morning, and additional increases are possible after that.

The areas most prone to be impacted are near Pegram and Dingle, near the Utah and Wyoming border.

“Lowland flooding of fields and pasture land will occur,” the weather service states in its Flood Warning. “Driveways to low lying homes next to the river near Dingle may have water across them.”

The Portneuf River in Pocatello has already reached flood stage and minor flooding was reported Friday afternoon. Both of those areas were affected by flooding earlier in the year.

The National Weather Service out of Salt Lake City has issued a Flood Watch and a Hazardous Weather Outlook for portions of Northern Utah and Western Wyoming.

Warming temperatures, reaching near record levels, coupled with gusty south winds will precipitate the Spring runoff in earnest. Minor flooding is expected along rivers and streams, particularly in communities like Huntsville, Woodruff, Randolph, Heber City and Park City.

The south fork of the Ogden River, from Causey Reservoir to Pineview Reservoir, is also under a Flood Watch.

“With the warmer temperatures, water levels in streams and rivers will rise due to snowmelt,” states the weather service. “Waters will be cold and swift, keep children and pets away from this hazard.”

In addition to the warmer than normal temperatures this weekend, high-based thunderstorms may roll in to the area beginning Saturday afternoon and evening an may be accompanied by strong winds. Those showers and thunderstorms may continue each day through Thursday next week.
