A 28-year-old Clarkston man died early Thursday morning in crash along I-15, south of Willard.
Utah Highway Patrol troopers report Austin L. Taylor was driving a small Ford Escort southbound, when he lost control on the icy roadway and spun off the freeway, near milepost 355. The car hit the cable barrier and then spun back onto the roadway were it was broadsided by a FedEx semi-truck pulling a single trailer.
The Escort went into the median and impacted the concrete barrier, then spun back into the lanes of travel and went underneath the trailer of the FedEx semi.
Troopers said Taylor sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene. The driver of the semi, 50-year-old Johnathan R. Bullock from Salt Lake, was uninjured.
UHP Sgt. Cade Brenchley said this was a particularly hard accident for law enforcement because Taylor was a Brigham City Fire Fighter, who troopers had worked with previously. He was also enrolled in the police academy at Weber State University.
Taylor leaves behind his wife, Marissa and two daughters. The couple were also expecting another baby in May. A GoFundMe account has been opened for the family. Funeral services are being arranged.
