Charges being dropped against man accused of threatening woman with a machete

LOGAN — Prosecutors are dropping charges against a 30-year-old Lewiston man who was accused of threatening a woman with a machete in November.

Ramiro Barrera appeared in 1st District Court Thursday afternoon for a preliminary hearing. He had been charged with one count of aggravated assault, a third-degree felony.

Barrera was arrested in December after the woman claimed he threatened her with the machete during an altercation. She was reportedly not hurt.

During Thursday’s court appearance, state attorney Barbara Lachmar said prosecutors were going to file a motion to drop the charges, after the victim declined to press charges. She explained that they would continue to investigate the assault and re-file the case if additional evidence was discovered.

Barrera was being held in the Cache County Jail without bail since being arrested.
