Alcohol request approved by Logan City

On a three to one vote Tuesday night the Logan Municipal Council gave its consent to a variance that would allow an establishment, Tanaka Balance, at 34 Federal Avenue the right to have alcohol sales.

Councilmember Jeanie Simmonds voted to go along but she said there is more to do because the business also needs approval of two neighboring churches.

“Because of the way the state law is written,” Simmonds explained, “we are not approving a license. We are only allowing them to move forward in their application. The state is the only one who does the approvals.”

Simmonds says St. John’s Episcopal Church has given its approval, but so far the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has not. The church has not approved a previous request from another downtown business: Even Stevens.

Both Herm Olsen and Tom Jensen voted with Simmonds but councilmember Gene Needham did not. Needham said he did not want to see more proliferation of alcohol in the city of Logan.
