Cache County saw incredibly high voter turnout in 2016

A whopping 85.5% of Cache County’s registered voters cast their ballot in the 2016 Presidential election. That was the report presented by Cache County Clerk Jill Zollinger to members of the Cache County Council.

Zollinger said prior to this, she believes the highest number of turnout had been just over 60% when Mitt Romney was running for president.

Why such a large turnout? Zollinger said she thinks one reason was people like voting by mail and this was the first time it was used in a Presidential election. Also, she said, there was voting on election day.

“Considering how many we had vote there were a high number who voted on election day, too,” Zollinger explained to the council. “Our building was busy and crowded all day on election day.

“The reason for that is we were in a pilot program with the state. People who hadn’t registered could register on election day.”

Zollinger said a total of 3,578 people voted on election day, many of them Utah State University students. Asked if she would recommend allowing voting on election day again, she said, “Probably not” because it is too hard to plan for.
