Senior Kaylie Kamalu-Smith’s career performance leads USU to 3-0 victory

LOGAN, Utah – Utah State women’s volleyball (13-16/8-10) recorded a 3-0 victory over San José State (12-17/5-12 MW) on Saturday afternoon, highlighted by the performance of senior outside Kaylie Kamalu-Smith.

Kamalu-Smith led the Aggies with 17 kills, hitting a career-best .625 (17-2-24) and flirting with a school record for a three-set match after hitting .800 (12-0-15) over the first two sets. She was followed offensively by junior outside Lauren Anderson and junior middle Carly Lenzen, each with 11 kills apiece. Senior setter Erica Moscoso finished the match with 39 kills as the Aggies had one of their most efficient matches of the year, hitting .371 (49-13-97).

Utah State jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the first set, but San José State countered with a three-point run to pull to within two, 5-3. The Spartans were within two again at 8-6, but the Aggies went on a 6-2 run to open up a 14-8 lead and never looked back. The difference grew to double digits at 20-10 behind a kill by Lenzen and then grew to 12, 22-10, following a kill by Anderson. Junior right side Kayla DeCoursey and sophomore middle Lauren O’Brien put the finishing touches on the set with a closing block, giving the Aggies the 25-12 win.

USU got off to another quick start in the second set, scoring the first three before the Spartans used a three-point run of their own to take a 10-9 lead later in the frame. The advantage didn’t last very long as Utah State countered with six unanswered points, taking a 15-10 lead. The Aggies led by as much as seven, 20-13, when SJSU made a late push and came to within three at 21-18. Utah State closed out the set with a 4-2 run and punctuated the win with an O’Brien kill to go up 2-0 with the 25-20 result.

The third set was the most competitive, as the teams fought through nine ties, including a 24-24 deadlock. The Aggies looked to be in control prior to the late tie, holding match point at 24-20 before the Spartans came back to square the match. O’Brien scored the final two points for the Aggies, recording a kill to break the tie and then teamed with DeCoursey for a final block to give Utah State the 26-24 victory.

DeCoursey led the Utah State block with four and O’Brien finished with three as the Aggies finished with 5.0 overall. Senior libero Hannah Gleason led all back row players with 14 digs, followed by San José State’s libero, Luiza Andrade, with 10.

SJSU was without a double-digit attacker as sophomore outside Giulia Gavio and freshman outside Latahevai Lousi tied for the team lead with nine kills apiece. Overall, San José State hit .192 (36-16-104), but did record more blocks than Utah State, finishing with 8.0 to the Aggies’ 5.0.

USU will close out its 2016 season and honor its seniors on Tuesday night when the Aggies host Weber State at 7:30 p.m., on Kirby Court at the Wayne Estes Center.
