Sky View graduate Mitch Berryhill to continue baseball career at Cal State Fullerton

LOGAN – Mitch Berryhill’s dream has always been to play professional baseball, and he feels got him one step closer to that dream Thursday. The 2013 Sky View graduate signed with Cal State Fullerton and plans on joining the team after one more season with Salt Lake Community College.

He will be a part of a team that has been to 25 straight NCAA Tournaments, made 17 appearances in the College World Series and won it all four times. Last year it was the sixth-ranked team in the nation.

Berryhill joked that the warm California was the deciding factor in his decision, but then admitted it was something else.

“I’m just looking for a winning team, honestly,” he said.

Since leaving Sky View, Berryhill has spent the last few seasons playing ball for SLCC. He was playing in a tournament when Cal State Fullerton coaches went to scout a player from another team.

“They saw me, they saw the speed,” he said. “They were interested in another leadoff hitter for their program. I guess I just fit the bill for them.”

Berryhill described himself as a contact hitter, using speed instead of power to get on base. It has helped him to a school-record .433 batting average. He wants to utilize these same skills in Fullerton as a center fielder and a leadoff hitter.

“I want to be a standout there, that’s what I want to be,” he said. “I want to have the best batting average on the team, I want to be the fastest kid on the team and I want to get drafted out of Fullerton.”

Berryhill credited his coaches at Sky View, especially Brady Pond, for helping him develop his talent. He said he plans on studying business while playing for the Titans.

“It’s a dream come true,” he said. “It’s a blessing, it’s unbelievable. I’m grateful for everything and the family that helped me get to that point.”
