Smithfield man pleads guilty to voyeurism

LOGAN — A 39-year-old Smithfield man has pleaded guilty to videotaping a teenage girl while she was in the shower.

Jason David Denton was in 1st District Court Tuesday afternoon for a scheduled preliminary hearing. His attorney, Shannon Demler, told the court that they had accepted a plea deal from prosecutors and wished to waive their right to the hearing.

State attorney Barbara Lachmar said Denton placed a video camera inside a bathroom heat vent in May so that he could record the 14-year-old in the shower.

Smithfield City Police officers reported Denton turned himself in after the girl caught him. He was later charged with voyeurism, a class A misdemeanor.

Denton only spoke briefly during Tuesday’s court appearance, telling Judge Brian Cannell he understood that accepting the plea deal would waive his right to a trial.

Details of the plea agreement were not disclosed. Denton could face up to a year in jail when he is sentenced November 8.
