LOGAN, Utah – Utah State linebacker Brock Carmen has been named the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week, it was announced Monday by the league office.
It is the first time in his career that the 6-foot-3, 235-pound senior from Clovis, Calif., has earned conference player of the week accolades.
Overall, this is the Aggies’ 14th MW weekly accolade in their fourth season in the league.
Carmen made the most of his first career start in Utah State’s 34-20 home win against Arkansas State last Friday on Merlin Olsen Field at Maverik Stadium. He was the only player from either team to have a double-digit tackle night as he finished with a career-best 12 stops, including a career-high 1.5 tackles for loss and career-high-tying 1.0 sacks, to go along with a career-high two quarterback hurries against the Red Wolves.
For Carmen, who was named the College Sports Madness (CSM) Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week on Sunday, it was his first career double-digit tackle game.
Carmen had four tackles in the first quarter and six in the first 30 minutes of play as Utah State held an opponent scoreless in the first half for the first time since Sept. 20, 2014 – a span of 27 games – when the Aggies led these same Red Wolves 7-0 at the break.
On the season, Carmen leads the team in sacks (2.0) and shares the lead in quarterback hurries (2). He also ranks tied for second in tackles (19).
San Diego State running back Donnel Pumphrey was tabbed the MW Offensive Player of the Week. Fellow Aztec, punter Tanner Blain, was tabbed the league’s Special Teams Player of the Week following SDSU’s 42-28 road win at Northern Illinois.
The Aggies (2-1, 0-0 Mountain West) return to action on Saturday, Sept. 24, when they take on Air Force (2-0, 0-0) on Merlin Olsen Field at Maverik Stadium. The Homecoming game kicks off at 8:15 p.m. and will be televised live on ESPNU.
