Airport open house will feature V-22 Osprey

It’s a cross between a helicopter and a turbo jet and the V-22 Osprey is currently stationed at the Logan-Cache Airport. The Navy has been flying the aircraft in the area while conducting tests.

Airport Manager Lee Ivie has invited the public out to see the Osprey up close at an airport open house on Saturday. The event will take place between 1-4 p.m.

Ivie says the aircraft has been here since July 11 and will be around until mid-September.

“It’s basically a combination of a helicopter and a turbo prop airplane,” Ivie explains. “It has jet engines on it with propellers. They use it for lifting weight and transporting heavy equipment.

“The group testing it is out of Maryland. They are affiliated with the Navy and the Marines and also they have Boeing company that is with them.”

He says they needed to test the Osprey at different elevations. It is approximately 4,000 feet above sea level here, at sea level in Maryland, and 6,000 feet at Gunnison, Colorado.

Ivie says those who come to the open house will also notice there is considerable activity right now at the airport.

“We’ve got construction going on right now. We are in the process of repaving our cross win runway,” says Ivie. “We have got a fog fill and painting project for our main runway.

“We have the design phase in process for next year’s paving project which is the northwest ramp and taxi way Charlie. So there is a lot of construction going on out here.”

Ivie says the Osprey is at the airport’s F-L 14 hangar. Osprey testing took place at the airport in 2011.
