Couple accused in Smithfield baby’s death, appear in court

LOGAN — A couple charged in the death of their young baby, appeared in court on homicide charges.

Michael A. Archer and Jessica Brunetti both appeared separately in 1st District Court Monday afternoon. The 24-year-old Logan man and 22-year-old Smithfield woman are charged with negligent homicide, drug possession and other misdemeanor offenses.

Early on the morning of February 22, police said they received a 911 call that the 11-week-old baby was unresponsive. The baby was found on the floor, in a bedroom of a home, located near 160 E. 400 N. in Smithfield. CPR and other life-saving measures were tried unsuccessfully by the Archer and Brunetti, and later by paramedics when they arrived.

Archer and Brunetti told officers that they had been drinking earlier in the night when they went to sleep with the baby on a twin size bed. Investigators later found evidence of other controlled substances in the home and both tested positive for drug use.

State medical examiners later determined the baby had died from asphyxiation.

During Monday’s court appearance, public defender Bryan Galloway said he had spoken with state attorneys but had not been able to resolve either of the cases. He told Judge Kevin Allen that Archer and Brunetti are working with caseworkers with the Department of Child and Family Services, and asked for six-weeks to work toward a possible plea agreement.

Judge Allen ordered both defendants to appear again in court September 20, to determine if a preliminary hearing would be set.

Court records show both defendants have previous convictions for drug and alcohol use. Brunetti also has been charged with additional misdemeanors for speeding and driving on a suspended license for an unrelated incident.
