Fireworks + hot dry weather = concern

We are headed into the biggest firework season of the year. At the same time, as it usually happens, we’re also approaching the hottest and driest time of the year. This is always a concern for Cache County Fire officials. On KVNU’s For the People program Wednesday, County Fire Marshall Jason Winn said the vegetation is definitely drying out.

Winn said though, “As far as the 4th of July, we’re not putting any restrictions on fireworks right now in the county. The state hasn’t come out and put any restrictions for the unincorporated part of the counties.

“So I think we’ll be okay this weekend. But I definitely think that in the next few weeks we’re going to have to really look at the 24th of July,” Winn said.

With many planning on lighting fireworks, Winn had some safety tips.

“If it’s windy, maybe hold off and not shoot them until the wind stops,” Winn urged. “That’s a big one. The other big one is make sure we have a bucket of water or a hose handy.”

Winn explained, “That way when you do get done shooting the fireworks, collect them and put them in the bucket and douse them off that way.

“That way you don’t end up throwing them away in a garbage can and then starting a fire that way.”

Winn also recommended wearing safety glasses and make sure you light fireworks just one at a time. More information is available about firework safety in general on the Cache County Fire website. Also search for Cache County Fire on Facebook.
