Women in Cache Valley are taking their safety into their own hands

The Well Armed Woman is a non-profit that enables women around the country to meet up to practice, learn and grow as shooters.

The National Rifle Association reports that women are the fastest growing group of consumers of firearms. Beverly Powell teaches instructor-level classes for the NRA and runs the Cache Valley chapter of the non-profit group, The Well Armed Woman.

Their group currently has 15 members that meet monthly. Powell said there is a growing trend of women getting their concealed firearm permits and even women who are afraid of firearms are joining their group.

“I’ve seen them go from ‘Oh no, I’m scared of this,’” Powell said. “To ’Oh my gosh, I can do this.’”

Powell said women have varying reasons for getting a concealed firearm permit.

“Just for personal safety, sometimes it’s emotional, sometime it’s physical,” Powell said. “I mean sometimes women have been threatened and they feel this is something they need right now for their protection based on their given situation. Some people do it because it’s a common thing and it’s their right to carry and they want to do it.”

Catherine Mortensen is the media liaison for the National Rifle Association’s Institute for Legislative Action. She said, based on a study done last year, women are the fastest growing segment of the firearm industry.

She said, “The number of women who have concealed firearm permits in this country have almost quadrupled in the last ten years.”

Mortensen said that between 2011 and 2014 there was an 86 percent increase in women taking their basic pistol safety class compared to an increase of only 46 percent of men taking the same course.

Mortensen said that concealed carry permit holders are more law-abiding than the average citizen in this country.
