Logan City has announced that the Merlin Olsen Central Park Ice Rink, located 300 East Center, will open for the season on Saturday, January 2. They are asking that people stay off the ice until the official opening to protect the new ice sheet.
There is no charge to skate on the ice, but if people want to rent skates they can rent them for $3 per pair. Over 300 pairs of skates will be available for rent, from size 1T all the way up to size 14 in men’s and women’s. A driver’s license, personal identification card or student ID must be left when renting skates. The rental shack will only accept cash, no credit cards, debit cards or checks and will not rent out skates after 9:30 p.m.
Rentals will be available Monday through Friday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., Saturdays and holidays from 12 noon to 10 p.m. and will be closed on Sundays. Hockey on the ice sheet will not be allowed during those public hours. Other amenities like hot cocoa and candy are not yet available at this time.
Wednesday evening, Logan City provided live updates on its Twitter feed of the process employees take to prepare the ice sheet. Employees sprayed 70 coats of water over the rink during an eight hour shift between 6 p.m. and 2 a.m. According to the updates provided on Twitter, it takes 15-20 minutes per layer of water that helps to firm up the ice sheet.
Before the water could be applied to form the ice, 10 inches of snow needed to be compacted to form a firm base underneath the ice. A warming hut has also be erected where people can escape the cold if they need to.
