Man hospitalized after traffic accident and shooting near Lewiston

A man was transported to Cache Valley Hospital Tuesday afternoon after traffic accident led to a 90-minute standoff with law enforcement.

Cache County Sheriff’s deputies and Utah Highway Patrol troopers were originally called to the traffic accident on US-91, on reports of a vehicle that had run off the road and hit a gas line. The accident was reportedly one mile north of the intersection with SR-61.

Moments later, deputies reported shots were fired by the driver of the vehicle who had a handgun. Additional deputies and troopers were called to the scene. US-91 was shutdown to all north and southbound traffic from SR-61 to the Idaho state line.

Negotiators and SWAT teams were also called to the accident, along with Questar employees to try and shut the gas line off.

The man later surrendered to SWAT team members after they surrounded his vehicle. He reportedly had two wounds from a .40 caliber handgun, one to the chest and the other to the left shoulder. The man was transported to Cache Valley Hospital by ambulance. His condition and identity have not been released.
