Troopers reminding motorists to drive cautiously during holiday travel

LOGAN — AAA predicts this extended holiday weekend will be the busiest since 2007 for travelers. As people hit the road, Utah Highway Patrol troopers are asking motorists to drive safely and remember to buckle up.

Lt. Lee Perry said after multiple accidents last Monday in Logan Canyon, drivers need to make sure they have good tires on their cars before driving in winter like conditions.

“Tires are critical this time of year,” said Perry. “Make sure they have good tread and good traction on them. That they are fully inflated, where they should be at.”

“Make sure that you have got some safety gear, some things in your car to take care of yourself if you do break down in bad weather. So you don’t end up freezing and we can get there as quick as we can.”

To check your tire tread, place a penny head first into several tread grooves across the tire. If you see the top of Lincoln’s head, your treads are worn and should be replaced.

Perry said it’s also important for drivers to slow down especially during winter like weather.

“People have got to slow down and drive reasonable speeds that they can stay and maintain control of their car in.”

Utah Department of Transportation officials are test piloting a need speed limit program near Salt Lake, in Parley’s Canyon. The program is experimenting with adjustable miles-per-hour signs that will change during inclement weather, enforcing drivers to slow down.

Perry said most importantly though, everyone needs to remember to wear their seatbelts.

“Put your seatbelt on. That may very well save your life.”

Troopers will be working “Click It or Ticket” overtime shifts, stopping and educating unbuckled motorists through the weekend.
