LOGAN, Utah – Utah State senior linebacker Kyler Fackrell has been named the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week, it was announced Monday by the league office.
It is the second time this year and fifth time in his career that the 6-foot-5, 250-pound native of Mesa, Ariz., has earned conference player of the week accolades. Fackrell also garnered the weekly award from the Western Athletic Conference twice during his redshirt freshman season in 2012 and once from the MW during his sophomore campaign in 2013.
This is the fourth time this season that Utah State has received a MW Player of the Week honor. Fackrell was also recognized by the league office on Oct. 19, while sophomore QB Kent Myers was tabbed the league’s Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 12 and junior WR Andrew Rodriguez earned Special Teams Player of the Week honors on Sept. 7.
Overall, this is the Aggies’ 13th MW weekly accolade in their third season in the league.
Fackrell recorded 10 tackles, including three of the solo variety and 0.5 tackles for loss, two quarterback hurries and a fumble recovery in the end zone for a touchdown as Utah State rallied from 20 points down to capture a 31-27 victory against Nevada last Saturday afternoon.
With 6:55 remaining in the fourth quarter, Fackrell recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown, which tied the game at 27-all. The Aggies then kicked the ensuing extra point to take the lead for good.
The fumble recovery by Fackrell was his nation-leading fifth of the season and seventh of his career. It was also his second career defensive touchdown.
Fackrell has had three double-digit tackle outings this season and nine in his career. He has also tallied 13.5 tackles for loss this year and 35.0 for his career.
Besides leading the nation in fumble recoveries, Fackrell also ranks third in the conference in tackles for loss (1.23 per game) and 21st in tackles (6.6 pg). The former Mesa High School standout is first on the team in quarterback hurries with 12, first in tackles for loss with 13.5, tied for first in forced fumbles with two and second in tackles with 73.
Utah State closes out the regular season at home on Nov. 28, when the Aggies welcome in-state rival BYU to Merlin Olsen Field at Maverik Stadium. The Senior Day game kicks off at 1:30 p.m. and will be televised on the CBS Sports Network (Comcast Ch. 269/753HD, Dish Network Ch. 158, DirecTV Ch. 221).
