CAPSA’s annual Stuff the Truck event raises money and supplies for shelter

On Halloween, Citizens Against Physical and Sexual Abuse (CAPSA) held its annual Stuff the Truck event. This year more than $800 was collected, as well as filling two vans and a truck with supplies at Smith’s Marketplace in Logan. The donations went to CAPSA’s shelter, benefiting those affected by domestic violence.

Events like this are crucial for the nonprofit organization. Around 60% of its shelter supplies come from this one donation drive. Everyday items such as towels, toilet paper, paper towels, trash bags, and baby wipes, among other things, were collected.

Event organizer Debbie Andrew stated the event was successful, exceeding expectations. This year’s donations were double the amount collected last year.

“It was really cool to see how generous people are,” Andrew said. “I’m glad that the community could help us out in such a great way.”

Many community partners were involved, providing resources and volunteers. More than 15 volunteers assisted in the donation drive. The Herald Journal provided two vans and volunteers to the event. Smith’s Marketplace, in addition to its location, donated a gift card to CAPSA. Packaging Corporation of America donated boxes to assist with the supplies.

“We are so thankful for our community partners who helped us with this event,” said Jill Anderson, Executive Director of CAPSA. “They assisted us in providing essential items for individuals in our shelter. These items give the hope to move forward.”

During the 2015 fiscal year, CAPSA provided shelter for 288 individuals, including 4 men, 128 women and 156 children. The need for shelter supplies is constant, as people are continually coming in and out of the shelter.

“Our shelter is an integral part of what we do at CAPSA,” said James Boyd, Development Director of CAPSA. “We are happy that we can provide a haven for those affected by domestic violence. These donations allow us to continue to provide this service.”

CAPSA is a Cache Valley non-profit organization with the goal of helping people affected by physical and sexual abuse. Founded in 1976 as a rape resource, the organization has expanded over the years to provide shelter, therapy, legal help, and other resources to those affected by abuse. Anyone who feels unsafe at home or within the confines of a relationship should call CAPSA’s 24 hour emergency hotline at 435-753-2500. A person in immediate danger should call 911.
