Logan man dies in boating accident at Cutler Reservoir

A 77-year-old Logan man drowned Sunday morning after the kayak he was paddling capsized in Cutler Reservoir.

Cache County Sheriff’s Lt. Mike Peterson said the man and his wife were riding in seperate kayaks about a mile north-west of the dock when they both fell out of their boats. Neither one were wearing life jackets.

The woman told deputies she was securing her boat while the man swam toward shore. The two were reportedly communicating with each other. She said after a few minutes though, her husband stopped talking to her. As she moved to check on him she found he was face down in the water.

Peterson said the woman was able to call 911 from a cell phone to request help. Deputies responded to the area along with crews from the Cache County Search and Rescue and EMT’s from Newton, Smithfield, and Logan Fire Departments.

First responders were unable to reach the victim from the banks. A citizen with a boat hauled EMT’s to the location but the victim was found unresponsive. He was taken to Logan Regional Hospital where was was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Peterson said detectives from the Cache County Sheriffs Office believe the death was accidental but are investigating. The victim’s body has been turned over to the State Medical Examiners office to determine the exact cause of death.

The man’s name has not been released pending notification of family.
