Flu shots for adults are just as important as they are for children

Flu shots are the best way to prevent getting and spreading the flu according to Lisa Perkins, immunization and flu program manager for the Bear River Health Department. Perkins says anyone over six months of age should have the flu shot and that goes for adults as well as youngsters.

“We’re trying to educate the adult population that they still also need vaccines,” Perkins says. “The important ones, in addition to the flu that we’re really focusing on, is called TDAP. That stands for tetanus, diptheria and pertussis, also the whooping cough.

“There has been a lot of education in the community about that one. There are some additional vaccines that we recommend as an adult, too, such as hepatitis A and B, the shingles vaccine, the pneumonia vaccine.”

Perkins says if adults are not sure whether or not they have had an immunization the health department can suggest ways to check out that information.
