Man pleads guilty to threatening suicide inside doctor’s office

Rex Porter, 59, arrested and charged, after he entered a doctor’s office and threatened to kill himself.

LOGAN — A 59-year-old Garden City man who was arrested in July after reportedly threatening to kill himself inside a doctor’s office, pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor charges and will be sentenced October 5.

Rex D. Porter accepted a plea deal in 1st District Court Monday afternoon. As part of the agreement, he pleaded guilty to using a dangerous weapon in a fight and carrying a concealed loaded weapon, both class A misdemeanors. As part of the plea, prosecutors dropped a third misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct.

On July 15, Porter was at the Southwest Spine and Pain Center attempting to refill a pain medication prescription. When the staff refused, he brandished a handgun and threatened to kill himself. Police said he never threatened the doctors or nurses in the office. No shots were fired and he didn’t point the gun at anyone else.

SWAT teams and negotiators entered the office and talked Porter into surrendering. He was taken to Logan Regional Hospital for treatment and later arrested.
