SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah’s first female chief of police has been fired nearly 25 years after she made history by taking the position.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/1JDe3nF ) the Garland mayor fired Police Chief Linda Bourne on Wednesday.

Bourne had been chief of the four-person department in the town of 2,400 since 1992.

Mayor Scott Coleman says he reached the decision after giving Bourne six months to implement a number of reforms, including beefing up officer training and improving documentation.

He says he requested the changes after receiving unflattering feedback about the town’s police force, but that nothing was done.

Coleman says the decision was backed by the town council.

The Salt Lake Tribune was unable to reach Bourne for comment on Wednesday.
