Utah governor OKs regulation of forced entry by police

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah’s Republican governor has signed a bill that requires police officers to identify themselves when forcibly entering a residence.

The measure signed by Gov. Gary Herbert on Monday will require law enforcement officers to wear identification and wait a reasonable period of time to be let into the residence.

The law also prohibits police from forcing entry solely because they suspect drug or paraphernalia possession.

If the department uses body cameras, officers will have to use them to record any forced entry.

The measure takes effect May 12.
