Logan City expanding solar power offerings

Logan City continues to participate actively in solar energy. Mayor Craig Petersen says a firm has been selected now to represent the city in negotiating for bulk purchases.

The mayor says what will happen is that people whose houses have the right orientation and have the money will be able to purchase solar power at a substantially reduced cost.

On KVNU’s Meet the Mayor program Wednesday, Petersen said there is a whole set of other people who are interested but don’t have the money or don’t have a house with the required south-facing orientation. He says the city council on Tuesday approved a “solar rate” which is just a little more than the regular power rate.

“The idea is that if they want to participate in solar energy we have some solar arrays,” explained Petersen. “If a lot of people want to participate in that rate then we will buy additional solar arrays.

“So they can participate in solar energy that way without actual ownership. The advantage, even though the initial rate is a little bit higher, once they buy into it the rate is going to be fixed for 20 years.”

He says that is because once the solar arrays are purchased it is a fixed cost with little operating costs. That rate will be available on May 1st and those interested should call the Logan City Light and Power Department.
