Draxler wants to help community governments fund roads

The 2015 session of the Utah legislature opens Monday and local lawmaker Jack Draxler, R-District 3, says it’s going to be a busy year. Cache County and Logan City councils have both expressed the hope that some financing will be found to help fund local roads which they see as a critical need.

Draxler says he is confident that something will be done and right now there are several approaches.

“The most fundamental one that I think should be done is to index the fuel tax to the Consumer Price Index,” Draxler explains. “When it goes up, the tax goes up proportionately.

“Not to the price of gasoline because it is too volatile, but to the Consumer Price Index. When you have a fixed amount that never changes, the purchasing power of that revenue stream becomes less and less with inflation.”

Draxler has also been getting attention for his proposal to raise income taxes by one percent to help fund education. He is a member of the legislature’s Education Task Force.
