CAPSA asking for your help to Stuff the Van full of supplies

In the mid-70s a few people who wanted to help victims of domestic violence started letting them into their homes. From there they evolved into a full shelter and program that helps hundreds of victims every year. Now CAPSA is looking for your help.

A Stuff the Truck event planned on October 25 hopes to help 850-900 people. James Boyd, Jr., Director of Marketing and Development for CAPSA, says the supplies that are needed are basic things you use in your home. Crumb Brothers has donated the use of one of their delivery trucks for the event.

“It will be at Smiths Marketplace from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.,” Boyd says, “so you can come down if you have supplies that will be beneficial to the shelter.”

Examples of things that are needed include twin size sheets, bottled water, cleaning supplies, and diapers. Boyd says that thanks to the work CAPSA does with the Cache Community Food Pantry not much food is needed.

CAPSA also has a mobile crisis response team that goes out on calls and helps on cases of rape and sexual assault. The team helps the victim and acts as their advocate. Over 300 cases were called in last year and were helped. Boyd says these cases happen at any time of day.

They also have a transitional housing program due to the fact that they are only able to keep clients for 30 days. Often these are people who don’t have jobs or education and this program puts these people in housing and schooling for an education. A few houses have been built for the programs through CAPSA. Two are already built and seven more are expected to be completed next year.

Other events happening in October for domestic violence awareness month are “Dine Out for CAPSA” in which local restaurants are donating proceeds to the local abuse shelter. The restaurants involved are Firehouse Pizzeria on Oct. 1st, Tandori Oven on the 9th, Le Nonne on the 16th, Café Sabor on the 22nd and Angies on the 28th.

Any type of donations are needed. To donate you can go to www.capsa.org/donate and Boyd says any amount of donation helps.
