Non-English speeches given at Mormon conference

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Mormon leader from Uruguay delivered a speech in Spanish on Saturday afternoon — the second foreign-language lecture during the first day of the church’s biannual conference.

Before Saturday, no leaders with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have had given a speeches in any language other than English, no matter their native language.

Eduardo Gavarret gave the Spanish speech, talking about the importance of following the voice of the Lord. Earlier Saturday, Chi Hong “Sam” Wong of Hong Kong gave his lecture in Cantonese.

Both are members of the church’s Quorum of the Seventy, a group of high-ranking leaders from around the world.

As they spoke, people at the conference center read English subtitles on big screens. People watching the broadcast at home heard a dubbed English version.
