Utah is the only state in the country that doubled its exports during the last five years and also the only state that had export growth during the recent recession. World Trade Center Utah President Derek Miller says Utah Governor Gary Herbert got that news out during the first-ever Utah Global Forum this week.

On KVNU’s For the People program Thursday, Miller agreed that when it comes to trade, things have been going very well.

“Our largest category is precious metals,” Miller explained. “Mining and natural resource extraction is a large industry in our state. When you think about what comes out of the ground, in this case, it’s primarily gold and copper.”

Miller said the second largest category is computer and electronics followed by chemicals, food products and transportation equipment. He explained that the outreach efforts of the World Trade Center Utah are focused on the areas other than precious metals because you can’t control the value of those.
