New gym and cafeteria coming to Providence Elementary

<p class=”western” style=”margin-bottom: 0in;”>PROVIDENCE – A new and safer gym is on its way to Providence Elementary. The previous gymnasium, and cafeteria located in its basement, was brought down last month because it was no longer seismically safe.
<p class=”western” style=”margin-bottom: 0in;”>”We told the public initially on the bond that our whole idea of part of the bond was to take care of seismic issues,” explains Mike Liechty, Deputy Superintendent for the Cache County School District. “That’s why Lewiston needs to be replaced, for seismic issues. For Providence the seismic concern was the two story part, the gym, the cafeteria underneath it and some classrooms.”
<p class=”western” style=”margin-bottom: 0in;”>The project ran into a brief snag when demolition crews struck a natural gas line, causing all crews to evacuate the construction site until Questar Gas could arrive and cap the leak.
<p class=”western” style=”margin-bottom: 0in;”>Liechty says students and teachers at Providence Elementary will have to get used to construction going on at the school throughout the entire upcoming school year.
<p class=”western” style=”margin-bottom: 0in;”>”School will be operating for a year with construction going on,” Liechty says. “We anticipate a year from now they will have a new gym, a new cafeteria. We are just replacing the space that we are taking out.”
<p class=”western” style=”margin-bottom: 0in;”>While the construction project is intended to replace an old gym and cafeteria with new ones in the same space, the design of the renovated space will allow for future expansion when and if necessary.
<p class=”western” style=”margin-bottom: 0in;”>”The new part will have an option to expand another four or five classrooms in the future,” Liechty says. “It’s designed to do that, but for now we are just replacing what is being removed.”
