LOGAN – A West Valley City woman was killed and a Logan man critically injured in a traffic accident Sunday night in Salt Lake City.
Mailefihi Tuaone (27) and Monte Keiaho (25) were hit by a semi while changing a flat tire along I-15, near mile marker 311 (around 1700 North).
Utah Highway Patrol reports Tuaone and Keiaho were traveling northbound on I-15 around 11:50 p.m. when their Toyota Corolla developed a flat tire on the left rear tire. The driver pulled to the right shoulder emergency lane and the two excited the vehicle to change the tire.
UHP said a semi-truck, driven by James Wiegand of Las Vegas, was traveling northbound in right hand lane in the same area. The semi-truck hit both individuals while they were changing the flat tire.
Tuaone was killed at the scene. Keiaho was taken to the hospital critical condition.
Troopers are investigating if the semi-truck driver drifted onto the shoulder or if the male and female had moved into the travel lane. Currently, no charges are pending until the conclusion of the investigation, which is still active.
