Utah State gymnastics celebrates Senior Night with win over no. 24 Southern Utah

LOGAN, Utah – Utah State gymnastics sent its seniors Paige Jones and Christina Nye out on a high note Friday night, topping the No. 24 Southern Utah Thunderbirds 196.000-195.550.

A USU team has not scored more than 196.000 in a meet since 2004. That season, the Aggies hit that mark twice, both times being against the Thunderbirds. The 196.000 score ties for the seventh-best score in program history.

Utah State notched a 49.125 on vault, 48.925 on bars to match the season-best score, a season-high 48.875 on beam and a 49.075 on floor, contributing to the 196.000 total. Southern Utah finished with a 48.775 on vault, 48.950 on bars, 49.050 on beam and 48.775 on floor for a total of 195.550.

Junior Sarah Landes represented the Aggies in Friday’s all-around action, finishing third with a 38.700. Southern Utah’s Tyly Bozutto claimed the all-around title with a 39.075, while Memory Shettle finished second with a 38.975.

Jones ended her career at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum on a high note. She claimed the vault title with a 9.875, placed second on bars with a 9.850 and tied for fourth-place on floor with a 9.800. Nye wrapped up her USU home career with exhibition performances on bars and floor, notching a 9.000 and a 9.350, respectively.

Along with Jones’ finishes, the Aggies were well-represented among the top finishers Friday night. Landes finished second on vault with a 9.850, while freshman Charly Belliston tied for third on both bars and beam with a 9.825 on each event. Landes, freshman Bailey McIntire and junior Susie Miller all shared the first-place spot on floor as they all notched a 9.850.

USU opened the meet on vault as sophomore Jillian Chappel led-off with a 9.800. McIntire nothced a 9.750, followed by freshman Katie Brown who landed a 9.800. Landes started off strong with a 9.850, while Jones hit a 9.875. Sophomore Miranda Kerr wrapped up the first event with a 9.800.

With an overall vault score of 49.125, the Aggies had an early lead. Southern Utah opened with a bars score of 48.950.

Moving to bars, freshman Makayla Betz opened with a 9.650. McIntire followed with a 9.800, while sophomore JoAnna Cuba notched the same score. Jones landed a 9.850, while Belliston concluded the rotation with a 9.825.

With a 48.925 on bars to match the team’s season-high, USU maintained its lead at the midpoint of the meet. After SUU notched a 48.775 on vault, the Aggies were up 98.050 to the Thunderbirds’ 97.725.

For the third-straight meet, USU earned a season-best score on beam, opened by Brown who hit a 9.725. Belliston landed a career-best 9.825, while Miller secured a career-high 9.800. Landes followed with a 9.800 of her own, while sophomore Stefanie Daley nothched a 9.725.

With one rotation remaining, Utah State still had the edge over Southern Utah, having notched a 48.875 on beam. SUU had a floor performance worthy of a 48.775, giving the Aggies a four-tenths edge.

On floor, Miller opened with a strong performance, earning a 9.850 to match her career-high. Landes was next, landing the same score. Sophomore Destiny Ezell notched a 9.725, while Jones earned a 9.800 and McIntire hit a 9.850.

The Aggies have a quick turnaround as they are set to compete in a tri-meet at UCLA on Sunday, March 16. USU will take on the No. 7 Bruins as well as Bowling Green State University.
