In less than a week, on Wednesday, March 12, it will all be over. Utah State Senator Lyle Hillyard, R-Logan, says as chairman of the appropriations committee there is still a great deal to do in Utah’s legislature and most of that has to do with money.
“The major issue right now is the speaker (of the house) has a technology initiative,” says Hillyard about Rep. Lockhart’s proposal, “whereby she wants to put more technology in schools and have the students using it more.
“Her initial announcement was for $300 million in ongoing revenue. There’s just no way we could do that without doing some major damage to other budgets or without a major tax increase. So we’ve been struggling to get that together.”
Hillyard says legislators have only until Friday night to come up with the best solution. He says everyone is working hard to come up with some agreement so a special session will not be necessary.
