Cold weather blamed for water main break

Crews replacing a 10-foot section of pipe near 450 West 500 South in Logan.

LOGAN — A broken water main Tuesday morning shutoff water to nearby houses for much of the day. The break occurred near 450 West and 500 North.

The break was first reported at six a.m. Logan City Water Division Manager Mike Roundy said the break was in a large 10-inch pipe that runs under the road.

The break also caused slick roads, especially along 600 West before the water was shut-off.

Roundy said cold weather is believed to have caused the older cast iron pipe to break. “As the ground freezes, it shifts and can break these older pipes,” said Roundy.

Crews replaced a 10-foot section of pipe and had the line repaired by 4 p.m.

Roundy estimates that around 25 neighboring homes were without water for six-to-seven hours because of the break.
