There will be a lot to enjoy on Saturday when the annual Elk Festival is held at the Hardware Ranch Wildlife Management Area. Ranch manager Brad Hunt said activities start at 10 a.m. at Hardware Ranch which is located about 18 miles east of Hyrum on State Route 101.

On KVNU’s Crosstalk program Tuesday, Hunt said all the events are free except for a ride on a horse-drawn sleigh or wagon through the meadow where at least 300 elk are already at their feeding ground. Hunt said people need to be sure to visit the visitors center.

“We have some new displays that are going to be in the main viewing area around our full-bodied mounted elk, as well as some new displays in the sleigh line where they wait to get on their ride,” explained Hunt. “We have a new display that is in process. It will take about another year to complete up in our Habitat Room. But it is finished enough where it is usable this year.”

He said activities at the festival include making Christmas ornaments using sagebrush, bitterbrush and other plants found at the ranch, learning how to turn a pinecone into a bird feeder and children can paint their very own replica of a fish.
