Speaker of the House Becky Lockhart discusses taxes

LOGAN – Utah Speaker of the House is a challenging job, according to Republican Becky Lockhart, because she says you have to be able to work with different political parties and people with a wide range of interests. While in Logan Thursday, Lockhart was a guest on KVNU’s For the People where she was asked about funding for education. The speaker said Democratic Senator Pat Jones wants to end the personal exemption for income tax to help education.

“I’m going to predict we’re not going to do a tax increase this year. It’s a difficult year to do it,” she said. “Our revenue projections are very flat right now which means hopefully we won’t have to cut budgets. We’re not going to have a lot of revenue to start new programs and do things. Remember, we don’t have a printing press like the federal government, so we have to be really careful. We have to balance our budget.”

Lockhart says unfortunately when you have low revenue and you want something, you have only two choices–raising taxes or cutting something.
