Meet the Blind in Logan

The National Federation of the Blind (NFB) has issued an open invitation for everyone to a low vision and blindness awareness fair, “Meet the Blind”, Thursday, 3-6 p.m. at the Bonneville Room of the Logan Library.

Kosandra Payne is vice president of the Cache Valley Chapter of the NFB.

“We are going to demonstrate how to use computers and other technology with speech and braille.

“People ask me all the time, ‘how do you find a can of beans in hour cupboard?’ We’re going to demonstrate those kinds of things. First, you organize things so vegetables go here and soup goes here. But you learn that when you pick up different cans of foods, they sound different when you shake them. For example, a can of beans has a more squeaky sound that a can of pineapple. And sometimes we can differentiate by the size of the can.”

Payne said the public is invited to this community event. She said it will be especially educational for children who ask her often about how she uses her computer.

Information will be available about blind students, parents of blind children and about blind senior citizens.

Payne said the meeting will be helpful for those losing their sight who want to know what tools and resources are available.

Other community resources such as Options for Independence will also be represented.
