Sheriff’s office warns of scams

LOGAN – The Cache County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of the community about fraudulent solicitors.

During the month of July the Sheriff’s Office responded to 11 incidents where the complainant was the target of a phone scam. Although the majority of the scams did not target a specific demographic, three of the incidents did appear to target elderly citizens.

These solicitations are made by phone but can also happen in person by door-to-door sales people. The Sheriff’s Office is reminding everyone that door-to-door solicitations are not illegal, as long as the sales person obtains a business license from each jurisdiction he or she sells in.

The Sheriff’s Office reminds citizens to be wary of any mailer offering free publications, information or gifts. Never respond to any mailing, and never provide personal information to anyone unless you know specifically who is requesting it and why.

If anyone is approached by a solicitor at their home, they may ask to see the solicitor’s business license. If, at any time, citizens feel threatened or harassed they are encouraged to contact law enforcement immediately.
