Utah alcohol board may vote on restaurant rule

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) – Utah’s liquor board may vote Tuesday to approve a rule requiring restaurant servers to get verbal confirmation from customers that they’re not just there to drink.

The proposed rule on the agenda for the Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission would have servers ask those ordering alcohol if they intend to order food as well.

The rule is an attempt to define to restaurants how they should abide by one of Utah’s more restrictive liquor laws – that restaurants cannot serve alcohol unless a patron is ordering food.

The Legislature tried to clarify the law earlier this year, saying alcoholic drinks can be served as long as customers indicate they intend to dine as well.

Critics say concept is silly and creates awkward situations for servers and customers.
