The search is over for a missing camper in Cache Valley’s backcountry. Deputies from the Cache County Sheriff’s Office have found 21-year old Jerry Gilbert Stevie Duran walking on the main road near the Anderson Ranch at approximately 4:45 p.m. Thursday afternoon. Duran was reported to be hungry but in good condition.
Cache County Search and Rescue crews had been searching for Duran, an Ogden resident, since approximately 6 a.m. Thursday morning near Hardware Ranch, east of Hyrum. He had wandered off from a campsite in the Curtis Creek area in Blacksmith Fork Canyon, approximately 13 miles southeast of Hardward Ranch.
Cache County Sheriff’s Office reports Duran is mentally handicapped due to a previous traumatic brain injury. He currently has the mental capacity of a 7-year-old.
Deputies used footprints, signs of the missing camper and search dogs to try and locate him. Search and Rescue crews from Rich County were called in to assist in the search and a helicopter from the Department of Public Safety was also requested.
Cache County Sheriff’s Office deputies were first contacted early Thursday morning after the 21 year-old wandered off from camp. Search and Rescue responded to the area and began their search about 6 a.m.
