SANDY, Utah (AP) – Police say they’re treating the discovery of a badly decomposed body discovered early Friday along the Jordan River in Salt Lake County as suspicious.
A motorist found the body shortly after 1 a.m. in a heavily wooded area on the border between West Jordan and Sandy.
Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal says the body was that of an adult, but it was uncertain whether it was a male or female.
He says an autopsy and forensic tests will provide clues as to how long the body had been there, as well as the cause of death and the person’s identity.
Plans call for the body to be turned over to the Utah State Medical Examiner’s Office after investigators complete gathering evidence at the scene.
Police say there are several homeless camps along the Jordan River.
