An early morning accident on I-15 near Willard snarled traffic and slowed commuters Friday. At approximately 5:20 a.m. a 2007 Freightliner registered to Associated Foods drifted into the inside lane guardrail and cement wall on the Willard Bay 357 overpass. According to the Utah Highway Patrol, the contact caused the fuel tank on the truck to rupture. The semi–truck jackknifed and caught fire.
The driver of the truck was not injured and was able to safely exit the vehicle. The trailer was empty but the truck and trailer were a total loss in the fire.
Both lanes of southbound traffic were shut down for several hours as crews worked to put out the fire and clean up the wreckage. Traffic was diverted off the freeway onto U.S. 89. Just before 9 a.m. one lane of traffic was opened up and vehicles were backed up for miles.
The accident remains under investigation.
